The Empire Theatres is regional Australia’s largest performing arts precinct, including various performance and function rooms. However, the Darling Downs’ crown jewel was built in 1911 and is known for its rich history and excellent design. Following the fire in 1933, the heritage-listed theatre was rebuilt into an art deco design. Then, it was ultimately repaired and reopened in 1997.

For nearly a century, the Empire Theatres have been a focal point for entertainment in Toowoomba and the surrounding districts. Now is your chance to get up close and personal with Empire Theatres. Throughout the year, the theatre hosts a variety of shows, including musicals. While you’re there, why not see one of these musicals?

The Addams Family

The Addams Family, a new comedic musical based on characters created by Charles Addams, is being presented by Downlands College. Andrew Lippa wrote the music and lyrics for the show.

The story of The Addams Family is one that every father fears. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate evil princess, has grown up and fallen in love with a friendly, educated young guy from a good family. Wednesday confides in her father and requests that he keep her mother’s secret. Everything will change for the entire family; they host a meal for Wednesday’s regular lover and his parents on a fateful night. The Addams Family is scheduled for June 2 to 4.

Mamma Mia

Following Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical in 2020, St Ursula’s College students will perform Mamma Mia in 2022.

Prepare to laugh, dance, and sing along as your favourite ABBA songs tell a funny story set in the Greek islands. A daughter aspires to learn the identity of her birth father on the day of her wedding. On the other hand, her mother remembers her childhood escapades. This fascinating story of love, humour, and friendship is not to be missed! Catch Mamma Mia from June 16 to 18.

Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is based on the 1996 Disney picture and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel. The story follows Quasimodo, Notre Dame’s hunchbacked bell-ringer, and his desire to one day be a part of the outside world. This musical, performed by the TCS Youth Choir, covers the themes of compassion and acceptance. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be performed twice on July 9, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

School of Rock

This comedy musical is based on the classic 2003 film School of Rock and follows Dewey Finn. He is a failed wannabe rock star who attempts to make some extra cash by acting as a substitute teacher at a prominent prep school. He transforms a straight-A class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful but stuffy headmistress while teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to rock and helps her uncover the wild kid within. The Next Generation School of Rock The Musical is set from September 9 to 11.
