Empire Theatres
Are you a fan of ballet or any type of performance art? Then don’t miss your chance to catch a show at the largest performing arts precinct in regional Australia. Not only is Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre a vibrant home to the performing arts, but the theatre is also a heritage-listed art-deco venue.
The Empire Theatre opened its doors on June 29, 1911. But on February 22, 1933 fire broke out leaving the northern and southern walls standing. When the theatre was rebuilt that same year, these walls were incorporated into the new art-deco style. The theatres seating capacity then was 2,400 patrons.
But after years of being Toowoomba’s cultural hub, other forms of entertainment such as television led to its closure in 1971. When the need for a performing arts complex rose, the large theatre underwent an extensive restoration re-opening its doors on June 28, 1997.
After over a hundred years, the heritage-listed theatre still stands and continues to play an important part in the cultural development of the region. Toowoomba’s Empire Theatres also continues to grow and boasts spectacular classic art-deco architecture with state of the art technology as well as other modern additions.
If you don’t have time to catch a show at the Empire Theatres, there is another way you can marvel at their classic art-deco architecture. Simply join the Empire Theatre Tour. They currently offer three tours.
- First is the Whistle Stop Tour, an in-depth tour of their magnificent building and even stand on the iconic Empire Theatre stage. Tours are usually scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 AM.
- Next is the Empire Explorer which is suitable for groups of 15 or more. Besides seeing the stunning architectural features, you will also venture backstage and experience a light and sound demonstration.
