Toowoomba’s rich history goes back as far as the start of the 19th century, when the first settlers arrived and some of its first public buildings – many of which still stand today – were built before the small countryside town was given its name.
In fact, Queens Park, one of Toowoomba’s most popular garden parks today, had a zoo at the beginning of the 20th century. This, however, was shortly followed by an economic crash in 1930, which saw unemployment rates surge in Australia and subsequently many people made homeless.
During this period, Toowoomba set up two camps in Jubilee Park and Redwood Park – all homeless families and single women camped at Jubilee Park, while all single men camped at Redwood Park. These two camps helped the Toowoomba council at the time to re-level Queens Park from its purpose as a zoo to the park as it’s seen today, and they also helped in renovating the famous Empire Theatre.
Tabletop Mountain, located just outside the Toowoomba CBD, also has its own fascinating history, being a tribal battleground in the mid-19th century between British colonists and Jagera aboriginals – best-known as the “Battle of One Tree Hill” – of which the Jagera people emerged victorious after 11 days.
Table Top Mountain is now one of the most popular locations to hike, and sightsee, in the Darling Downs region!
